Summary
The Obodina municipal waste landfill lies just outside Trebinje and has been the city's main disposal site for decades. Preliminary soil testing found several metals, and pollutants associated with combustion, above the level at which soil is no longer considered clean, while no finding reached the level indicating that cleanup is needed. The general conclusion of the report is that the location requires further detailed analysis.
Assessment findings
Findings of concern
- Elevated nickel and cobalt were found in the soil, above the level at which soil is no longer considered clean.
- In individual soil samples, cadmium and zinc were also above that level.
- In one soil sample, pollutants associated with combustion were above that level.
- Because of the strongly karst terrain around Trebinje, water — and any contamination — can move quickly underground toward the wider Trebišnjica hydrological system.
Positive findings
- No measured parameter reached the level indicating that cleanup is needed.
- Oil-related pollutants were within limits in every soil sample.
- Lead, chromium, copper, selenium and molybdenum were within limits in every soil sample.
